ANSWERS:


1. Who is eligible for admission?

Our program aims at those who are either current law graduates or students, or practicing lawyers. An applicant must meet the following requirements:

J.D., LL.B. or equivalent law degree;

Enrollment in a J.D. program or Qualification to practice law.


2. How long will the LL.M. program take?

The duration of the program is 1 year (two semesters). If a student can only stay for one semester for the first time, he/she may come again for another semester within 2 years, in order to get the degree.


3. Does Tsinghua admit students for only one semester?

Yes. Law students from other countries may also choose to take one semester at Tsinghua and request permission from their home law schools to apply the credits toward their degree. Students coming for only one semester can attend the fall semester or the spring semester. A student who has completed one semester at Tsinghua will get a certificate.


4. Is an interview required?

Interviews are not required, but the admissions committee may conduct telephone interviews when there is a such need.


5. What are the language requirements?

This program will be conducted in English and all the materials will be in English as well. No Chinese language skill is required. Those who have Chinese do have an advantage in using more materials. We will also provide a Chinese language course for those who are interested while studying at Tsinghua. More intensive Chinese teaching could be arranged individually by the students at their own costs.


6. How many electives courses do I have to take?

As the LL.M. Program requires a minimum of 24 credits of course studies, and generally each course consists of 2-3 credits, an LL.M. student may select 4 to 5 elective courses that interest him/her the most.


7. How will my performance in the LL.M program be evaluated?

There is no comprehensive examination at the end of the LL.M. program. A score will be given to the each course based on examinations or papers. Most of the required courses have in-class-examinations and most of the elective courses have take-home-examinations. The examinations may take the forms of written essay or question s-and answers at the decision of the professors and teachers.


8. How much does the program totally cost?

The following tables show costs for typical students enrolling the LL.M. Program. These figures are accurate for most foreign students and should serve as a guide to reasonable expenses for foreign students attending the Law School. Expenses within specific categories may vary significantly from student to student.

Expenses Calculation:

Rent/Utilities/Food – The rent in the table is based on the rent for living on campus. The highest amount of campus dormitory, which is a single room with private bathroom, air-conditioner and color television, is $9.6 (RMB 80) per day with utilities included. Food expense per day is around $2.7 (RMB 30) if the students have each meal at the university cafeterias using meal card.


Medical - Students are required to get medical insurance and any other necessary insurance before departure of your resident country. You may also purchase insurance upon registration through the Ping An Insurance Company of China. The fees are as follows: 1 semester 6 month coverage RMB 400 yuan ($49), 1 academic year 12 month coverage RMB 600 yuan ($73). The insurance covers: SARS treatment; Emergency medical treatment, regular medical treatment, and hospital stay, etc. Please read the brief introduction to insurance for international students before purchasing. For further information on this insurance, please contact the Ping An Insurance Company of China Beijing office customer service 8610-82003019. If your insurance has expired, please renew it according to your stay in China.


9. Is financial aid available?

Since this program is to be offered for the first time, we currently do not have scholarship available. We are trying to make scholarships offered by some institutions and firms. Therefore, applicants are strongly encouraged to seek funding elsewhere, from a variety of public and private sources, and to contact their home governments and employers.


10. What should I prepare for the application?

The applicant should submit the application package to the program by March 31. An application package must include:

The completed Foreigner’s Application Form for Admission to Graduate Programs of Tsinghua University, signed by the applicant (original and duplicated)

Personal Statement

The original or the notarized degree certificate or proof of education in academic institution, and academic transcript (original and duplicated)

Two academic recommendation letters from scholars of associate professorship or higher (original and duplicated)

Two copies of the page with personal information in the passport (personal and ordinary passport)

Two copies of applicant’s recent photo (cap-free, 2 inches, stick on the application form)

The completed Application Form for Tsinghua University Scholarship (if applicable, original and duplicated).

The application fee is RMB 600 (non-refundable).

The certificates provided should be the original documents in Chinese or in English, otherwise notarized translations in Chinese or English are required. None of the above application documents will be returned.

11. Is there any on-line payment system I can use to make the application payment?

Yes, there is. When your application on line has been verified, you will
receive the link for the payment by email. Then please pay on line.


12. Do all the students who attend the LL.M. Program need to take the physical examination?

Yes. All the students who study the LL.M. Program are required to do the physical examination.


13. How to do the physical examination?

Please do the physical examination adhering to the “Foreigner Physical Examination Form” and pay attention to the followings:

a. Make sure that the doctor sign on EVERY page of the “Foreigner Physical Examination Form” ; and

b. Make sure that the doctor stamps on your photo on the first page of the “Foreigner Physical Examination Form”; and

c. Make sure to bring all the original physical examination results including the X-Ray together with your “Foreigner Physical Examination Form” and let your doctor sign on EVERY copy of the original physical examination result. and

d. If your doctor can not give all the original physical examination results, you are required to do it again in China. So you are suggested to make sure that you can get all the original copies in order to avoid spending the extra expenses when you come to china.


14. Should all the students finish their study within one year?

It depends. The students can finish their study in LL.M. Program within three years.
