Opening Ceremony of Leo KoGuan Building Successfully Held

9 September 2018, remarks the Gala Opening Ceremony of Leo KoGuan Building, the second building for Tsinghua University School of Law. In addition, Deans of Law from USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, Korea, India, Singapore and other countries, and representatives of Tsinghua alumnus, former heads of Tsinghua University, retired faculties, students and representatives from all areas witnessed the grand opening of the new building.

With Dean Shen Weixing as the moderator, the opening ceremony started with a student chorus. President Qiu Yong of Tsinghua University, Leo KoGuan of the Leo KoGuan Foundation, Jia Chunwang, Chairman of the Tsinghua University Law School Advisory Board and former Chief Procurator of the Supreme People’s Procuratorate addressed respectively.

President Qiu Yong warmly welcomed guests of all walks of life on behalf of Tsinghua University and expressed sincere gratitude to those who had been supporting the development of Tsinghua University Law School. Endowed with long history, Tsinghua University Law School has developed comprehensively since its reestablishment in 1999, President Qiu Yong said. Tsinghua University Law School has become the center of China's high-end legal talents training, legal research and international academic exchange, all of which has make it an important impetus for the reform of Chinese legal education. With the continuous development of economy and society and the deepening of reform, construction of the rule of law is bearing more and more important missions. Comprehensive promotion of the rule of law not only provides a valuable opportunity for the construction of law disciplines and legal education, but also puts forward higher requirements. It is hoped that the law school would  take the opportunity to build high-quality faculty team, speed up the construction of legal personnel training system, and actively carry out cross-disciplinary research, so as to achieve first-class research results, cultivate first-class legal talents. It will further promote the core competitiveness and international influence of law, and make contribution to the rule of law construction with Chinese wisdom and Chinese practice.


President Qiu Yong said, Tsinghua University is moving towards the goal of a world-class university. School of law is an important part of Tsinghua University's "Double First Class" construction. We hope that all sectors of the community will continue to care for the development of Tsinghua Law School and contribute wisdom and strength to building China a better country.


Mr. Leo KoGuan congratulated Tsinghua University Law School for its new beginning in his speech. With shared belief, Mr. Leo said, we can work to build a better world. A photo of the new building was sent as a present to Mr. Leo KoGuan.

On behalf of the Tsinghua University Law School Advisory Committee, Jia Chunwang expressed heartfelt thanks to guests of all sectors for their support to the building and the development of Tsinghua University Law School. President Xi Jinping had made a clear request for legal education: "We should strengthen the construction of the rule of law and the cultivation of the rule of law, and give full play to the basic and leading role of legal education", Jia Chunwang said, Tsinghua University Law School should keep in mind its responsibilities and mission in strengthening legal education and promoting the process of governing the country according to law. It is hoped that the School of Law take this as an opportunity to make better use of the education resources and contribute to the construction of socialist rule of law with Chinese characteristics.

Jia Chunwang said, further discussion with scholars and experts from both in and abroad can be undertaken on the first Tinghua World Forum on the Rule of Law, which will be held after the grand opening ceremony. The topic of rule of law is of significant meaning. To build a world-class law school, we should unswervingly follow the socialist rule of law with Chinese characteristics, and learn from successful experiences of other countries and regions in the construction of the rule of law through dialogue and communication.

Dean Shen Weixing said, Tsinghua Law School has achieved leapfrog development, and now is one of the Top 50 law schools around the world. Thanks to the joint effort of the faculty of law school, we were able to achieve this result. He thanked the guests for their ardent exhortations, saying that we would strive to build Tsinghua University Law School a law school that is worthy of Tsinghua reputation and meet the requirement of the new era.
