Law Students Visit King & Wood Mallesons Law Firm for a Day of Learning, Exchange, and Inspiration

DATE:2025-11-28

On November 27, a group of thirty-one students from Tsinghua University School of Law visited King & Wood Mallesons (KWM), one of China’s leading international law firms. The visit brought together students from the LL.M. Program, the International Undergraduate Program, the Program on Enhancing Legal Thinking Capacity and the Exchange Program. Professor Chen Xinyu and Ms. Liu Mengci accompanied the group.

The visit began with an icebreaker activity, during which students introduced themselves. Students from different countries and regions shared their legal backgrounds, academic experiences and first impressions of KWM.

KWM partner Qin Yugong then delivered the first presentation on the history of KWM, tracing the firm’s development from its early days to its current position as a top-tier global law firm. He also emphasized the firm’s “East meets West” philosophy — a commitment to bridging legal cultures across jurisdictions.

The second presentation was delivered by KWM partner Wang Rui. She introduced the KWM Academy as a professional training platform designed to develop legal professionals with the interdisciplinary skills needed to address future global challenges. Drawing on partnerships with top Chinese and international universities, as well as major corporations and financial institutions, the KWM Academy aims to build a bridge between academic study and legal practice.

Ms. Wang also shared personal reflections on her experience studying abroad, emphasizing how global exposure can broaden perspectives and shape long-term career development. She noted that the KWM Academy collaborates closely with Tsinghua University, offering courses, guidance, and internship opportunities for its students.

After the presentations, students enjoyed a tea break and spoke informally with lawyers and interns. This was followed by a lively Q&A session, where students engaged directly with KWM partners, associates, and human resources representatives. Several Tsinghua Law alumni shared their experiences of transitioning from university to legal practice and gave advice on building a successful career in China.

The visit concluded with an address by Professor Chen Xinyu, who thanked KWM on behalf of Tsinghua University. He emphasized the value of direct interaction between students and practitioners, noting that firsthand exposure to the professional world is an essential part of legal education. Professor Chen highlighted the long-standing cooperation between Tsinghua Law School and KWM and expressed hope for deeper collaboration in the future.

The visit offered students a firsthand look at the working environment of one of China’s top international law firms and a chance to interact directly with lawyers practicing in China. Through presentations, open dialogue, and personal exchanges, the event strengthened the bond between Tsinghua Law School and KWM. The School of Law extends its sincere thanks to KWM for its warm hospitality and for providing students with an enriching and inspiring afternoon.
